“Ancient Aliens is an American television series that premiered on April 20, 2010 on the History channel.Produced by Prometheus Entertainment, the program presents hypotheses of ancient astronauts and proposes that historical texts, archaeology and legends contain evidence of past human-extraterrestrial contact. The show has been criticized for presenting disputed pseudoscience.” (Wikipedia)
It is a really entertaining an informative PRIMER into alternative archeology, and as such it does a great job of introducing you to this fascinating topic. For a die-hard researcher, there isn’t anything new here, but it’s still nice to see everything compiled into one comprehensive whole. Most of the issues presented are not explored in depth, which is understandable because of the format of the show.
As for the archeological establishment’s disdain for this type of investigation – it’s understandable to a point. But, in my view at least, it is archeology that needs to propose a better solution to these questions. For the time being, some of the mainstream explanations for these things are, simply put, insulting to the intelligence. It’s not merely erring on the side of caution in many of those cases, but rather erring on the side of lack of imagination. I don’t, personally, subscribe to the ancient aliens theory (which is a theme sometimes perhaps over-simplistically harped on within this series), but even so, it beats the mainstream answers hands down in any case. Which only tells you how unimaginative – and ultimately unscientific – the mainstream “answers” all too often really are.
